Submission Sunday 6.1.25: Book Recommendations for Sharing Your Work with the World

Happy Sunday, writers! I hope the words have been flowing and the submissions have been received with appreciation.

I was inspired to put together a list of books I often recommend to writers after last week’s Chicago Sun-Times fiasco. If you somehow missed the debacle, the Chicago Sun-Times published a summer reading list that recommended fifteen books, TEN of which were fake books by real authors that were completely made up by AI. The freelance writer hired to put it together came forward and took responsibility, and AI users everywhere got a much-needed wake up call.

Anyway, what follows is a list of recommended books that actually exist and can be used to improve your submission game, whether you’re shopping short stories and essays, completed manuscripts, or book proposals. I’ll start with books specifically about sharing your work with the world and end with some craft books I really like for polishing your work in the privacy of your own home/writing group.
